Installing 24in fountains to alternate returns. Trying to figure out what I'm removing and do I need it?

Installing 24in fountains to alternate returns. Trying to figure out what I'm removing and do I need it?
Hi all, anyone know what this pvc cylinder is? It's got a piece of flex hose in between the pipe and the back of this thing. I have two of these, but one of the 2in heads broke off one of them so I was going to replace the piping with 1.5in pvc for the fountains I just purchased. If I don't need these then I'm going to toss them?
