Main drain port at skimmer - close or open?

Postby daryl75 » Mon 13 Jul, 2020 22:07

There are 2 ports under my skimmer basket - one to pump and one to main drain (I assume, since there no valves elsewhere for opening / closing the main drain). When the pool service people open our pool, they leave the port to the main drain plugged. They just tell us to fill the pool up to skimmer opening. Since they've left that port closed and did not ask us to open it, we've left it as is. However. from what I've read and seen in videos, that port is open so that there is some water circulation at the bottom of the pool. Should I open this port? Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

I don't have that type of skimmer. You could try and see if it's any better for you
However main drains aren't that efficient and are quite often left closed
Maybe ask your pool opening guy why it's left closed
