Ezy-vac problem

When I run my Ezy-vac pool cleaner it runs fine for a few minutes then gets caught trying to go past or behind my steps. I have a set of round steps with a weight to keep it in place and chrome handle attatched to deck. Is there some trick or procedure that could eliminate or at least reduce this? I can't leave the cleaner alone for any amount of time. After the cleaner gets stuck on the step it will sometimes climb the wall until it breaks the surface and then loses suction.
