My pool pump psi was at 55, but when I turned the pump off, it dropped to 40. Does it sound like there is something wrong with the gauge? The pump sounds fine.

Yeah if the gauge is only reading 40 with everything off then its most likely to gauge. I'm assuming you've cleaned your filter lately. Gauges are pretty cheap so get a new one and try it out.
