I have a 12000 above ground 24 round pool.. the total alkalinity is at 220ppm... way too high... everything else is in range... the pool is cloudy...

questions...
how do i bring down the ta?
is it safe to swim in at this time?
will bringing down the ta clear up the cloudiness?

Get your pH up to the mid to high level in the recommended range and then use Muriatic acid to lower your pH to 7.2, then aerate your pool to get your pH to raise without raising your TA.

When the pH is back up, add more muriatic acid to lower it once again to 7.2. You may have to do this several times.

Another method is to use the acid ball method of application of muriatic acid. Turn your pump off. Take 2.5 cups of acid and dump it in 2 or 3 places about a foot away from the wall of your pool and in the deepest part of your pool. Don't drizzle it around, dump it slowly in one spot at a time. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then turn on your pump. This will lower your TA without lower your pH by much, if at all. It will still take a few days to do this but it lowers TA more quickly than drizzling to lower your pH. Don't apply this more than once in 24 hours.

Always test your water before adding any chemicals.
