Buy a GOOD test kit from your pool supply house and follow the directions. The kits, in my opinion, are much better than the test strips. Get a kit that will test for free and total chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid and total hardness. The kit will run about $60.00 to $70.00 and will last all season. Next season replace all the reagent bottles or buy a new kit. The kits come with a booklet that will give detailed instructions on how to adjust your water. Best wishes.
