Is there another reason for irritated eyes?

Postby JakeStone » Mon 27 May, 2019 10:07

One of the teenagers in my pool, was chatting with me, with a "btw my eyes were pretty irritated - too much chlorine", however he swims in the rain too. Is there something else that may cause irritating eyes? No one else has made this concern. due to excessive rain we have been getting only a handful of people have been in it since it was opened

My current numbers
pH: 7.4
alk: 90
cya: 30

thanks!

No chlorine figures?
It isn't usually the chlorine that causes eye irritation, it's chloramines, the spent part that has combined with bather waste, dirt in the pool etc. That is what give rise to "the chlorine swimming pool " smell. If you sniff fresh chlorine up close it has very little smell, once it touches sweaty skin etc it immediately produces that strong odour. Testing for free chlorine and total chlorine and subtracting free from total = combined chlorine (chloramines) and that figure needs to be as close to zero as you can. Adding more chlorine (shocking) allows chlorine to oxidise the combined chlorine out of the pool.

Test the chlorine levels.
Buy some pool test strips, they are easy to use, just dip them in the water & compare the colours on the pack to get your results.

Don't buy test strips they are useless, buy a decent, accurate test kit!

I’ve always heard that it’s actually people doing their business and sunscreens etc. introduced to pools that irritates people’s eyes. Teapots response makes me believe what I’ve heard.

Always best if people shower before going swimming and no peeing

Agree, I am planning on putting an outdoor shower near our pool for that reason. Many people here in the US do not abide by that concept.
