Maintaining chlorine levels

Postby Stacib8988 » Tue 19 May, 2020 08:03

We started off the season with our CYA levels high. After draining some and refilling there was improvement. We normally use liquid shock and 3 inch chlorine tablets. This will be our third summer here. The previous owner used liquid shock. We’ve found it hard to maintain chlorine levels with the liquid shock and tablets in the feeder. I’ve been reading and thinking about switching to use the cal hypo granules for shocking instead of the liquid shock. We are still fairly new to the pool world and I wanted to make sure this would be fine to do and potentially help keep levels up.

You really need to get yourself a decent FAS/DPD test kit (Taylor K2006c or TF Testkits TF100 in the states) to get accurate results as maintaining an appropiate shock level means testing quite often during the day
Let's have your numbers
FC:
TC:
pH:
TA:
CH:
CYA:
Excessive CYA renders your chlorine ineffective and you have to use more to get the same sanitation
For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Dichlor, it also increases CYA by 9 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Cal-Hypo, it also increases Calcium Hardness (CH) by at least 7 ppm
