Can you dump salt in pool to decrease hardness?

Total hardness and calcium hardness in pool water.
Scale, calcium buildup, hard water and scaling problems.

Will dumping large amount salt into pool without a SWG help the hardness? A friend did this and i'm not sure it is a good idea...

No. Salt will not decrease Calcium Hardness (CH). CH is only (practically) decreased through dilution with water lower in CH. There are other ways to reduce scaling, especially in an SWG pool. Read the Water Balance for SWGs article in the Pool School I linked to in your other post.

Thanks for the info... I am goin to read more and get a better test kit. Once again the pool is NOT a SWG, it is a paper filter with chlorine system. My friend thought dumping salt in the pool would act like a water softener. If our water is naturally hard, we cannot dilute it with more water.
