Fibreglass pool now grey - stained by chemicals?

Hi,

I have recently added lots of chemicals to my pool; powder to lower PH and granular chlorine to raise PPM. Now, my pool has very high PH and very high PPM. However, it seems that the addition of these chemcals has stained my pool as the pool sides are now grey (not blue as normal). Is it possible that tha chemicals have now runined my pool and the pool needs repainted?

Whilst anything is possible I doubt the pool needs repainting.

Discolouration of fiberglass is not that uncommon. Reading between the lines the most likely culprit was the granular chlorine.

Could you please post your water chemistry results to make it easier to see what is happening.

The most probable solution is a citric acid or HCL acid, acid wash. Depending on your chemistry one may be preferred over another.

Hi,

I have taken the water readings using the kit and it would seem that the chlorine level is very high and the PH level is very high.

PH: 8.2 (should be pink colour - is red)
CL/BR (mg/l): >8 (should be light yellow colour - is nearly orange!)

So, I think the chemicals in the pool are completely incorrect. Any advice from anyone.

First you need to stop adding chlorine or turn off the SWG. Let the chlorine level drop I would like it at 0-1 ppm. Then we are going to acid wash the pool and see if this can remove the stain for you. It usually works.

To calculate correctly I need the TA and pool volume.

Thanks so much for the response. I'm a complete novice and have no idea what TA means ;(. I have a pretty cheap testing kit that lets me fill two columns with water and then add 4 drops of solution to each one. The colour tells me the chlorine or acidic level. Do I need a more expensive testing kit?

TA = Total Alkalinity a 5 in 1 test kit normally measures this.

Thanks for that; I guessed at the meaning this morning on the train, so now I feel like an idiot. I'll look around for a kit today (may need to order one!). In the meantime I may try adding some acid tonight as a way of lowering the PH from its ridiculously high level. I'll let you know if that has any effect...
