Proper way to open pool pump

So I have an inground pool with a pentair cartridge filter with 1.5 hp pump. I have opened the pool before but just had new lines run and want to make sure my opening is correct. So here is what I do. I connect all the plugs and everything minus return caps in pool. I prime the pump and then open the top of the filter valve at the filter to get more pressure built up and have the water fill up in the filter. When they water starts to flow to the pool the pressure is so strong you can hear the flow under ground. I don' want to break any of my new underground pipes. So my question is am I doing it correctly or should i just prime the pump and not open top of the filter valve or do anything with the valve handles to the return where i slowly open them while water is flowing.
