Water level when closing

I live in Maine and have an 18x36 inground pool. The pool was closed by our pool company 6 weeks ago. In the past month we have had a lot of rain and I recently checked the water level in the skimmer and it is up to the very the top of the skimmer. Should use my portable sump pump and lower it? or should I leave it alone?
