Winterizing in SE Texas

We bought a house during the summer that has a guinite in-ground pool. We are just now getting a fall here in Houston and we need to close the pool. Houston freezes about once maybe 3 times in the winter. We have gotten conflicting recommendations on how to close our pool. Either fill it to the top and keep filter on for about 1-2 hours a day and just let the filter run on nights that it may freeze. We have also been told to do the whole draining of the filter (which is D.E.).

So, what to do? This is our first pool so we are total newbies!
