I wish you had some responses to this query, as I have the same issue. I have researched without much feedback. So this is what I've planned on doing: (1) Leave the pool full of water, not because of northern climate issues but to protect against pool surface delamination. (2) Treat the water with algecide for wintering and a double dose of shock. (3) Clean the water and pool from all leaves, etc. (4) Cover the pool to protect from UV, leaves and dirt. I'll probably have some work to do on water conditioning when I return in the fall, but hopefully not too much. I'll then probably have to adjust the process for the following year.
