In ground pool freezing pipes???

Postby sebby607 » Thu 17 Mar, 2022 18:27

Hi everyone I'm a new pool owner I live in southwestern Ontario. This year was my first time closing my in ground pool i blew out the lines but did not add any anti freeze. I'm just wondering if for example some water was still left in the pipes and it froze would the pipes burst? or do only full pipes burst? also if the pipe has an open end would the pipe burst even if it did freeze? because with a open end the ice is free to expand and pressure will not build up? just a little nervous i didn't get all the water out of the pipes before winter. Thanks in advance for the help guys!

Depends on how deep the pipes are. Here in the UK it is considered safe from freezing at 2' 6"
In South Ontario its 3' 6"
If the pipes are not full then there is room for the ice to expand
Regarding the open end, it all depends on how it freezes. If you have two bends on the ends and that freezes first then it will have nowhere to expand
It's done now, so wait and see. Good luck

what do you mean by two bends on the end? like a 90 degree bac to back fitting?

If you have a straight run of pipe with a bend on both ends
If the bends freeze first then the straight run of pipe has nowhere to expand
