winter water level

Postby beifstu » Sat 15 Dec, 2007 20:18

I've closed my pool and drained to below the returns. I have the returns plugged but was wondering if it was important to keep the water level below the returns throughout the winter? we have been getting alot of rain and the water level is a couple of inches above the returns right now.

I'm sure it's quick and easy answer. Can someone please advise?

I am assuming this is an inground pool.

I usually plug up the vacuum intake and filter return after blowing out the lines with a shop vac, but I only drain the water below the skimmer line to avoid freezing damage to the skimmer shell. Depending on where you live, you should pour the proper amount of anti-freeze (NOT AUTOMOTIVE, see your pool dealer) which should protect the lines from freezing damage, but they do not need to be below the water line. Hope that helps!
