Advice on closing above ground pool

We purchased home recently that had an above ground pool that has not been used in over 2 years. The pool itself is in good condition, however, the cover over the pool had shredded in spots and debris had gotten into the pool. We had tried to shock and add chemicals, but we could not get the pool clean enough. We decided to drain the pool and clean all debris before refilling it again. With the heat this summer, the liner riped before we could refill the pool.

With only having a month left of the summer, we are thinking of closing the pool for the winter. Our concern is how to do this. Should we purchase a new liner, install it and fill the pool half way to close it up normally for the winter? Or just cover the pool to prevent additional water and debris from getting into the pool until we can properly open it next spring?

Our new home is located in a rural area and the cost to transport water to fill the pool is our main concern. We do not want to use our well water to fill the pool.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is this pool located in the North where it may freeze, or is it down south where the temperature rarely dips below 50º overnight?

I would suggest closing the pool and then replacing the liner next season, just to ease on its wear and tear. If you are thinking of closing the pool winter then you can follow some steps such as you need to add the winter chemicals before covering the pools. Remove the eyeball fitting on your return line and plug it up with a rubber plug with a wingnut. You can also use winter chemical kit.
