High chlorine level

When I run my swg through is cycle the chlorine is usually on the high side 3.0. Do I have to run it everyday or should I run it every other day to get the chlorine right on the money? Also when I take a pool sample the Chlorine is good for about 10 minutes after that it disappears. Is this normal or do I need to shock it??

High chlorine level

3 ppm FC is not high. It all depends on the Cyanuric Acid (CYA) level of your pool. I would not trust pool store readings nor those from test strips. Please get yourself a good test kit -- either the Taylor K-2006 or the TF-100 with the latter kit having more volume of reagents so is comparably priced per test. Please read the Pool School to learn how to maintain your pool -- especially the article on Water Balance for SWGs.
