Vacuuming after flocing

Just wondering if you have to vacuum to waste after flocing when using a sand filter? It wastes so much water and was just wondering if you can just have the sand filter set to normal filter and then backwash the filter when you have finished?

Unless the floc is excessive, vacuum normally and then backwash/ rinse as usual.
