What do pool installers do to avoid footprints in the sand during above ground installations?
I was thinking to try sheets of foam insulation to stand on? Or maybe tape giant sponges to my feet?
Any suggestions?

Compact the sand first with a wacker plate and wear flat sandles
So long as you spread the load with stiff sheet material

Seconded, if the sand isnt compacted properly youll have dents in the bottom of the pool forever afterwards.
I may not give you the answer you want to hear, but I will give an honest opinion of your situation as you decribe it.

Trowel sand flat by hand. Get out of pool and drop liner from outside. Use shop vac method to suck liner tight and pop out any wrinkles with a pool broom. Once it looks perfect, add water till liner is set, then pull out vac hose and keep filling. If a liner is cut right this method is foolproof.
