Leaking Fittings at Multiport Valve

I used a teflon based sealant while installing the male fittings into my multiport valve. All three are leaking. I tightened till I thought it was plenty tight, didn't want to break the PVC. Should I have just used Teflon tape? Any help appreciated.

Teflon pipe dope ie correct, I suspect that you overtightened the male adapters in the ports. Hayward recommends hand tight then one revolution with a wrench.
On male adapters I generally use about 3 wraps of teflon tape then a coating of teflon dope, then tighten per manufacturers spec.
