Everyone, I have a Hayward single speed pump & sand filter on my 13,000 gallon pool located in Phoenix AZ.
Its a good 25 years old so has done its duty but lately the sand filter connections have started dripping and last couple of days the pump stopped putting out pressure and now we have bubbles coming out of the jets in the pool where it used to have good water pressure.
Guessing that its time to go with a new pump and filter assembly. I will be 72 in a couple of months, so not looking for something thats going to last another 25 years (since I probably will not! ) but do need something that works well thats hopefully affordable.
Suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Joe in Phoenix

Sand filter connections have O rings inside them, after many years these harden and flatten, simply replace the O rings and save your money. Upgrade from sand to Dryden Aqua AFM ng for the best filtration which never needs changing and lowers maintenance.
Pump wise a variable speed pump is the best option but also a flow gauge so you know what flow you are getting and can tune the flow to your requirements. That should make big savings in running costs and pay for itself.

I may not give you the answer you want to hear, but I will give an honest opinion of your situation as you decribe it.

Teapot,
Thanks very much for the advise. I am really good working on airplanes but almost zero experience with pool systems!
Thanks again!! Joe A

Good news is pool systems are a lot simpler, I was a hydraulic/pneumatics engineer years ago so have some idea but would be lost in an aircraft at least for a while.
