Pump sizing

I need a new pump. Looking for an energy efficient and quiet one. I don't want to over size it. My pool is inground, 20x40, 2 jets, top and bottom skimmers, 1.5" pvc pipe, hayward 244s filter. No additional stuff like spas or waterfalls. Pretty basic.

You could probably get by with a good 1HP, I would suggest going up to a 1.5HP tho to be on the safe side. Hayward has the Super II pump which would cost 375-400 bucks if you shop around. Pentair and Sta Rite also make pretty good pumps but will probably run a few dollars more.

With that size filter, you will want to keep flow rates below 60 GPM for optimal filtering but you really shouldn't need much more than that either. I would go with one of the smallest two speeds on the market and here are a couple of choices depending on the voltage setup of your current pump:

Pentair Superflo SF-N2-3/4A - 3/4 URHP @ 115v
Pentair Superflo SF-N2-1A - 1 URHP @ 230v
Hayward Superpump SP2607X102S - 1 URHP @ 230v

Anything larger is going to be a waste of energy.

Mark is right.
Bigger pump is not always better. It is not like bigger motor on your truck. There is no transmission to adjust to demand. On the contrary, it is designed to move designated amount of water thru certain size of pipe and given obstacle which is a filter.
It is not like a sump pump that will throw water thru 15 ft of 2" PVC into an alley.
Under ideal condition (clean filter), it will draw given current and KWH you can calculate. As the filter creates higher backpressure due to trapped debris resistance, the demand on the motor with incremental RPM slowdown will increase power consumption and may even cause overheating and failure if grossly unmatched with piping and size of filter.
The only manual transmission here is you and a correct match!
