Pump works, but not when hooked up to the filter

Trying to get our pool opened. Pump works fine--it's new. But when we have it running to the sand filter, every thing stops!!! Pump is pumping virtually NO water and nothing is coming from the filter to the pool. Any ideas on what the problem may be??
