EcoStar VSP and 1.5 inch piping

Hi!
I'm installing an EcoStar VSP (3hp). It is replacing a 1.5hp Super Pump.
The filter is a DE3620 and all piping is 1.5 inches with 3 drains and 6 returns (4 at spa, 2 at pool).

What would be a good max speed since the hp is getting doubled?

If you set the Ecostar around 3000 RPM, the flow rate should be about the same as the 1.5 HP Superpump at full speed. However, for the pool, I would try it at 1000 RPM and see if that is enough for the skimmers to work properly. That is the most efficient speed for the EcoStar but sometimes it is not enough flow rate for the skimmers or cleaners.

I agree, set your Max Speed to 3000. If you are still getting pump strain, then trim it down to 2800 or so to find that 'sweet spot'.

How about the pressure?

Will it hurt my filter/pipes?

I did the pump/filter calculation(6,500gal pool, 13.6gpm, 30ft of head), max speed should be around 2,000rpm. The filter is a Hayward DE3620 that can handle much more gpm so, I'm more worried about the 1.5in pipes.

What do you think?

Exactly how did you do this calculation because it doesn't appear to be correct?


If you keep the RPM below 3000, the pressure and flow rate will not be any higher than your current pump. The pipes are not an issue. They can handle much more pressure and flow rate than the pump can deliver.The only thing that can be damaged by high flow rates is the filter and that filter has a design flow rate of 72 GPM which is what the EcoStar will deliver on full speed and 1.5" plumbing. So you could probably go full speed if you really wanted to. But there should be no need to except for maybe the spa jets.
