You are sucking in air under the vacuuming load
Does the pump strainer basket have air in it when it stops working?
Check the "O" ring on top of the pump strainer basket and lubricate it with silicon grease or Vaseline
Your vacuuming hose could also have a split in it

You need to look in the pump strainer with the pump still running when the Kreepy stops working to see if there is air in it which seems the most obvious
Have you tried lubricating the "O" ring?
Can you try another vacuum hose?

I very much doubt that there is a problem with your sand
I don't know why you are getting the brown water back into the pool unless you are doing something wrong
Have you tried what I previously suggested first

The fact that the filter and pump run normally when not vacuuming indicates that air is being sucked in under the vacuuming load
If you are unable to find this I suggest you employ a professional or some one local who can look at your setup and advise
What I have suggested I find cures this problem
