clogged pool cleaner return pipe

It appears my Hayword pool cleaner has sucked debree into the pipe running back to the pump/cleaner. I've tried closing the spring loaded cover to it creates a "pop" to possibly loosen what is stuck, but no good. I've cleaned the filter and also tried to turn the cleaner valve off/on quickly to loosen, no good. I believe my next step would be to put air pressure in the pipe. I can buy a air tank for 100-125 PSI but what are the correct steps so I don't crack an undergound pipe or something else?
