Determining correct size and type of pump

Pool was here when I purchased the home, has a 1hp (1.25 SF) single speed pump and cartridge filter. I can’t read anything on the filter housing but filter itself is Pentair Clean & Clear Predator 200 Sq Ft Filter

- 15,000 gallon (based on measurement calculations)
- 2” pipe
- 2” inlet & outlet on pump (no name on pump, century motor)
- Solar panels on roof
- Run cleaner on the skimmer suction side
- Drain in bottom, no fountains or water features

Pool Pump runs 8hrs a day and is at the end of life, rusting out and running very hot (will shut off). I was trying to calculate the THP, so I put a Vacuum and PSI gauge on pump to get some readings, here is what I got.

- 10 psi (10 x 2.31=23.1)
- 20 hg (20 x 1.13=22.6)
- 23.1 + 22.6 = 45.7 TDH

I’d like to save on electric if I can, was leaning toward variable speed pump but don’t want to spend $800 + on a pump so was looking at some of the lower cost VSP’s. The only one that I didn’t see anything negative on was a Harris, which comes in 1.5hp ($399) and 3.0hp ($499). Certainly on the fence on / question reliability and quality of these pumps, will it really work properly for my application, and save energy. Tried going to the local Pool supply place and got " this 3hp should do the trick" without asking me any questions.

If a 1hp pump works ok now, then a 1.5hp VSP would definately be ok. You could then reduce the speed to a more suitable flow.
The slower the flow, the better the filtration.
The higher speeds can be used for backwash
I have a .5hp pump which delivers 10.8 cubic metres per hour
Your 15000 US gallons equates to 12500 UK gallons so 25% larger than mine
The 1.5 should be well within the size and if you can get it to run at about just over .5 hp
