Pump Seal

Postby sparkwatercleaner » Wed 17 Oct, 2007 17:59

Hi there!
Just one quick question:
How do I know if the seal of my pump is broken?
Why does it break?
If it is broken, is there risk of electrocution?
Thanks for any answer...[/code]

im by no means any expert, but my pump seal just went out on me (actually 2 different seals, plus i went through an extra one that i personally broke trying to install myself (OOPS!)).

anyways:

"how do i know if hte seal of my pump is broken?"
you will see water coming from the shaft connected to the impeller (depending on pump set up; if its like mine, this is how i knew). also, i was getting air bubbles in the pool.
"why does it break?"
like most parts on machines, they just wear out over time. most seals consist of a ceramic piece and a spring loaded piece to hold them tight together. if the ceramic becomes broken or the spring begins to loose tension it can begin to leak on you
"is there risk of electrocution"
not that i know of, i have heard people running with wearing out seals (mainly my brother) for a while until it stopped pumping water. again it depends on the pump setup, but i dont think you risk electrocution, but if it causes the pump to run dry, you run the risk of a burnt out motor which is much more expensive than a pump seal.

if you dont know, take it into the local pool shop. most, like leslie's, dont charge for labor, just parts. i have gotten all my seals done there and it ends up costing <$15; again much better safe than sorry, a seal is <$15, while a motor can run in the $100's.

someone correct my answers if they are wrong....:)
