Wiring size and pump heat

I just installed my Whisperflo 1.65hp SF pump (wired for 230 volt) and it seems like it is running hot. It isn't burning, but it wouldn't be comfortable to keep my hand on it for very long. I never touched my old pump so I'm not sure what is normal. I ran 14 guage wire (stranded) since the manual had a chart saying 14 gauge is what to use for runs 100 ft and under (my run is only 12 ft from the clock timer). Am I being paranoid or not?

Hi,

I'm not an electrician so this info is only from what I have seen. Normal wire size is 12 gauge solid (not stranded). Might be worth a consult with an electrician if you're concerned.

Some more information... I stuck a thermometer on it and it seems to be running in the 120 degree F range.
