My Pool: 15x30 52" pool, 22" proline sand filter, all I know

I have a 15X30 pool with a 22" sand filter, I am new to the pool thing. When I started the filter some sand flowed into the pool, how do I make sure this doesn't happen and how do I get it out, do I vaccum the pool on a backwash setting (a friend suggested this).

I have tried backwashing and vacuuming at the sametime when i had a D.E filter and there was powder all over. I worked out really well actually.
