help with algae
As long as you have algae, you need to keep your chlorine high / at shock level, day and night. This is why I suggest people should use liquid chlorine, because shocking with pool store shock usually is adding CYA and it gets too high and requires even more chlorine.
Algaecide really isn't effective to kill, it's more of a preventative.
So get yourself some liquid chlorine and use that to shock.

Well yes, chlorine is chlorine but the strength is different between chlorox and pool store liquid chlorine.
Regular bleach can be 6% or less chlorine and pool store liquid chlorine is usually 10.5% or 12%.
Regular strength chlorox is 6% in most areas of the country. Off brands may be lower. So read the label.
For 16,500 gallons you will need 3.6 gallons of 6% to bring it to 15 ppm from 2 ppm. Or, you will need 1.7 gallons of 12.5% to do the same.
Buy whatever is most cost effective. For me, 12.5% at my local pool store is actually more cost effective, unless I get a killer sale on Chlorox.
But then you have to consider storage - as it takes twice as much Chlorox as the 12.5% pool store chlorine.
Whatever you do, buy extra, because you should keep it high and may need to add more during the day once or twice to keep it high. Once it stays high all night long you can let the chlorine drop back down to appropriate swimming levels. Get a FAS/DPD test kit to test your water for that high of levels. Run your pump 7/24 until you get it all balanced.

Good point Buggs. I checked my local pool store for chlorine yesterday...they wanted $9.95 a gallon for 12% "Liquid Pool Shock" ...and people were buying it right and left. I think I need to get into the chlorine business.
Sounds like you have a much more reasonable dealer in your area.
Backglass, Oh my goodness, are they for real???!!! 12.5% here is normally $3.30 per gallon in returnable jugs. This month they have a special, buy 3 get a 4th gallon for free. So, for $9.90 we get 4 gallons of 12.5%.
Right now Safeway has their brand of 6% bleach on sale for $1.25 for 3/4 gallon. I've noticed here that all of the brands have switched to 3/4 gallong jugs rather than 1 gallon jugs. Sneaky devils. Which works out to be what?- 1.67 per gallon but you have to use 2 gallons to equal the 12.5% so it's still more economical to buy pool store 12.5% even without the sale. I do try to watch for good deals at dollar store type retailers, but often their bleach is even lower strength.
