Ive had two pool specialists look at my marbelite pool to give opinion on a series of dark grey stains that are appearing in random patterns everywhere. Both have concluded that it it not algae given the testing they have completed. What else could cause this type of staining?

The pool is only 12 months old

It may be metals. You can check most currently available stain treatments with a Jack's Magic Stain ID kit. It has small amounts of various treatments JM sells to test and see if they will work.

Some metals stain even when tests show none in the water, but I would still recommend doing any tests that are available in your area. Check the local water you are using. If its public (not your own well) they should have data about trace minerals/metals in it.

Hope this helps some. If you do remove the stains look into metal sequestering agents to prevent the problem from coming back.
