Pool heater off when pump off?

Postby dabearz73 » Sat 02 Dec, 2017 20:53

I'm a new pool owner. I have and in-ground pool with a Jandy natural gas pool heater. I have my pool pump scheduled to run from 10am to 6pm. If I have my gas pool heater on during the day and don't turn it off, will the pool heater operate after the pool pump turns off at 6pm or does water need to be pumping through the gas heater to activate the gas heater? Concerned that gas will continue to burn while no water is circulating.

I don't have any knowledge of pool heaters as I have a heat pump
With my experience as a heating engineer It should have been installed so that only when water is flowing it would call for heat
I suggest that you give it a try and turn the pump off when it is running to see what happens

Hi your pool heater will only ignite if your pool pump is running. You set the temp and the heater will turn on until water is up to temp then will turn off until water has dropped a few degrees below usually around 5-10*
Then will turn on and raise the water temp back up. So its more efficient to not let the pump shut off so the heater keeps the water warm If you let the pump shut off at the end of the day as it normally would your pool will loose all the heat and then the heater has to run all morning to get the water back up to desired temp. It will cost a little more electricity but save u on your gas bill.

Don't waste money on acoustic covers, reduce the noise with a variable speed controller and save a fortune on electricity. Noise is just wasted energy.
