Trouble shooting Pentair Sand Dollar Filter

Postby zeern2003 » Tue 22 May, 2018 21:56

Hi everyone.
We have a 15x30 above ground pool with a Pentair Sand Dollar filter.
We have finally gotten our water chemistry straight, but every time we turn on the pump it shoots an amount of sand into the water first. It stops doing this on it's own, and then will start filtering. I am tired of having to vacuum up the sand each and every time we we want to use the filter.
We are fairly new to "Pool Keeping" so definitely could use some advise. Pressure gauge appears to be fine reading about 20.

Thank you so much!

What is the clean pressure as 20psi seems quiet high, have you backwashed?
Also do you have the correct grade of sand for your filter and is it filled to the correct level?

Thank you so much for your reply! :)

We were given the pool and equipment by a friend. We went to our local pool store and bought the sand telling them what type of filter we had. They told us that we needed 150 lbs of sand. It has been set up for 2 weeks now. Water is crystal clear, but when we have had the filter shut off and turn it back on, then Wham, out comes a bunch of sand into the pool. I know my husband has back washed it before, I will suggest doing that again. It is so frustrating. :?

If you were told 150lbs of sand then your filter should be an SD40 (can you check) using grade 20 silica sand
It is possible to check for air in the filter with the manual air relief
