Pumping off pool cover

Is it necessary to continually pump water off your pool cover in the winter. Why can't you just wait and just pump it all off one time in the spring ?

If the pool cover is an automatic electric safety cover, or anything attached to the sides of the pool, then one must pump water off the top to prevent too much weight which will stretch and possibly tear the cover. Some winter covers attach to the sides. If there is enough slack, then water on the top is not a problem as the cover is just in between two layers of water, but if not, then that's why you would pump the water off.

My cover is just a plastic/nylon type of cover that is weighted with water bags on the side of the pool. We've had a lot of rain lately and my cover is suspended about 1 ft under between the water on top and the pool water underneath. Should this be pumped or not ? tks
