My Pool: 20k Gal. inground pool with connected spa and finished in Pebbletech. Pentair equipment. Switched from salt to chlorine because got tired of replacing the cell. Automatic Pentair valve system failed so we switched to manual 3 Ways. Also replaced all the gate valves to Jandy.

Questions about burned out pump

We went on a three day vacation. Our pool is set on a timer. Our teenage son was at the house and was supposed to watch the pool levels as we have a small leak - but he didn't and the inlet pipes were turned purple from heat. My question is simple. Our skimmer has two ports in the bottom. I "assumed" that one port goes to the pump and the other is an equalizer which pulls water from either the main drain or some port that would usually be found under water. Isn't it designed for just this type of scenario? No water in the skimmer so it pulls from another port? We have never had a skimmer float in the skimmer - in fact, we didn't even know they existed until we recently began researching it.
What went wrong?
