I have a 25K gallon gunite pool in Michigan. Pool heater is an ancient Hercules millivolt heater that stopped working last summer. I was told it needed a new gas valve and they recommended just replacing the heater. As a single mom $3000+ is a tough bill to swallow right now. My question is: can't the gas valve just be replaced? Are they specific to models? Maybe that's the problem as I'm sure Hercules are not sold anymore. I'm aware a new pool heater would be much more efficient. I also considered solar panels, but not sure how much they would help in our climate with the size of my pool. Any recommendations or input?
Thanks, a lost mom!

Re: Repair vs purchase new pool heater
Gas valves are generally standard equipment made by specialised manufacturers and not specific to individual heaters
Get a heating engineer to look at it and see if he can replace it
Some engineers work on the principal that if it's old or obsolete to replace as you don't know what's going to break next
