Testing kits, available in the UK?

Postby molokoid » Thu 27 Jun, 2019 12:39

Can anyone point me in the direction of recommended kits (suitable for a beginner) that are available in the UK please?

Thanks in advance.

I can, but still no response on the 2019 price list. I emailed the MD this afternoon and I have known him for years. Sadly looks like the staff answering the phone are not good and need more training.

OK. Aware you were busy and probably not getting much joy / progress.

Keen to get something, get my pool sorted before this summer disappears!

Hi - same problem with sourcing tester except I am in France. I have been trying to get hold of decent FAS-DPD tester to supplement (or replace if necessary) my Lovibond Scuba II. Scuba limitations - can't deal with SLAM chlorine levels or CH levels (I also believe Teapot has misgivings about the CYA accuracy).
I've tried to source Taylor K2600 and Lamotte 7022 to no avail. Lamotte tells me that these liquid reagent testers are illegal in EU since they don't comply with EU REACH Regulatons. Are there alternatives that are obtainable in the EU? (at a sensible price!)

Any ideas? If it's easier, I would be happy with stand-alone high chlorine (free and combined) and CH tests. Water board tells me our water is 300ppm but I think it is quite a bit higher than that. I'm also trying to SLAM at 18ppm which is, obviously impossible without proper testing.

Thanks

Hi,
I am not sure what is going on but I received bits of price lists and not the whole thing. They mainly included 3 times the test strips prices which they should know by now I never sell and for good reason.
IMO the best value kit for someone with no testing apart from strips or two bottles (Oto test) is the electronic Color Q Pro 7.
The reason why is; decent range for free chlorine, total chlorine, Bromine (if needed) pH, Total alkalinity, Calcium hardness and Cyanuric acid.
The number of test reagents inclded in the kit means not having to buy more reagents for quite a while, 100 tests reagents for free and total chlorine, pH, TA, CH and CYA. Other manufacturers include as few as 10 reagents for each test so their testers look cheaper but are not (Scuba users) You don't dunk the unit so no flooding issues (Scuba users).

It's true, strictly speaking the liquid reagents cannot be posted as we head towards an ever more stupid world! FAS DPD are liquid based but for high levels of chlorine shock testing dilute the sample by adding the same amount of water (distilled is best) and doubling the result. Oto doesn't bleach out above 10ppm like DPD does but in reality you are measuring total chlorine but usually still suitable for shock tests.

Hi teapot, or indeed anyone, can i seek recommendations on an entry level testing kit for purchase here in the uk please. Obvs taking the strong advice to steer clear of strips, but do not want something that is going to confuse what has already been a very steep learning curve for me!

Thanks in advance.

Ah, sorry I though I read you had ordered one?
Color Q Pro 7 is about £165 with enough test tabs to last a good 3 years as it has 100 test tabs per test, way more than others.
There are some cheaper single tests but by the time you add up the additional reagents not really cheaper but about £109 with 50 test for chlorine and pH but 20 test for the rest.
