confused on what size pump and sand filter

Postby AussieGuy » Wed 29 Jan, 2020 01:50

hi all.

we have a 4,300 gal above ground pool.
at the time, we installed a 1000gal sand filter & 3,785 L/h (1000 gal/h) pump.

we've had a tech come around to check it out as it stopped pumping, and the feedback was that it was a bottom of the barrel quality and not big enough for the pool, as we are going to use all year round.

chasing some feedback on what size sand filter we do need, and what specs on the pump to look for?

thanks

You normally spec a pump to the filter because you don't want to be pumping in excess of your filter capacity (it will push the dirt through)
So it seems that it is specified correctly
But to put is slower through a larger filter is better as the filtration is better
The fact that your pump stopped is just a pump problem and unless you are going to increase your filter capacity don't increase your pump size

thanks for your help.

so i'd be OK with a larger filter & the same pump, or larger pump and larger filter?

Yes but remember that a bigger pump isn't always better
I have a 10k (UK) gallon pool and a pump that pushes 10.8 metres cubed 2375 uk gallons
Your pool is less than half the size of my pool
Slower filtration is better
