The cause of your fine silt maybe different to mine, I am in a very rural area and when the farmers cut the crops the dust is very fine and passes through a 5 micron filter but lays just the same as yours and turns grey. I have examined it under a high power microscope but sadly without being able to measure it. If vacuuming it you need to move slowly otherwise the slightest pressure wave from moving the vacuum head pushes it away only to re settle later but you will reduce it over the days. I use a towel in my skimmers when necessary but also having a variable speed pump I can lower the flow so it is collected rather than pulled through the toweling. Any idea where yours may come from?

What would be the original cause of the silt? How can I make it so it never ever comes back once I remove what is in there now?
Ugh! Somebody else with my problem! I have tried all the algaecides and Slams that I can, to no avail. I'm gonna try the the towel thingy and see what happens. I'm so sick of vacuuming to waste! My pool store kept saying it was mustard algae, and it does kinda have the appearance of algae when you approach it...just puffs away as soon as you get close! I'll let you know how the towel works for me.

I usually don't put my solar cover on, but that would be one way to see if it keeps out the silt.

I don't think that will help, it is very fine, lands on the cover and you can't get it off without it going in the pool. Fortunately for me it occurs around the harvest for about two-three weeks but it can travel in on the wind for a few miles.
Give up on algaecide, waste of money and chlorine use goes up as chlorine tries to oxidise the anti algae out of the water.

My Pool: I will be building my new in ground pool and will need some great and informative tips

Hi

I am busy to build an in ground swimming pool from concrete.
The pool will be length 18 feet, wide 8 feet and depth 4.9 feet.

I want some advice and recommendation regarding the construction of this pool.

What is the best coating or sealing for the concrete wall
What is the best filter to use for this pool, DE, sand of cartridge filter
What is the best pump to use for this swimming pool also best in energy effeminacy
What is the best way to put the drain one is enough seeing that the pool is not so big
How long should the pump work to filter the entire pool seeing the measure that i give.

Hope that i can get some great advise for this project that i will begin.

OK in order;
Best sealing, a vinyl liner, also makes water chemistry easier, 2nd glass fibre coating, if you have lots of money then Ecofinish. worst, any kind of paint!
A sand filter but using AFM glass from Dryden Aqua, Activate in the US.
A variable speed pump. You also need a really good pool hydraulics specialist like me.
You don't really need a main drain.

I am new to this site and the pool business, and was after some help on a couple of things if possible.
My testing strips have four tabs Chlorinity, Alkalinity, Stabliser and ph these work great the problem being with the results. Two are in spec but the other two being Chlorinity which is reading slightly higher than zero and Alkalinity which is the opposite being too high at 240.
Ph and Stabaliser are fine.
I have shocked the pool by the way.
ANy suggestions ???
Thanks Rich

Hey ! I am new here too and recently built a swimming pool. Don't know how to maintain properly. hope this forum will help help.

My Pool: My pool is about 17-20k gal. It's concrete and about 35 years old. We have a LOT of trees that shed leaves in the pool part of the year. There is a sand filter with new sand as of about 6 months ago.

Save me from the Green Goddess.

Postby bwhitehead » Sun 31 May, 2020 14:36

I bought a house with a 35 year old concrete pool last year. There are a lot of live oak trees around the pool that shed their leaves and pollen in the pool from March to mid-April, after that we start getting heavy rains and hot days. I changed the sand in my pool filter about 6 months ago and my pool stayed much nicer for a little while. Now we call the pool the Green Goddess. I run the filter about 12 hours per day and the average daily temp right now is about 90. Every day my pool gets a little more green. Now it is vivid green. I have been backwashing but it doesn't seem to be helping at all. How long should I backwash and rinse before I put it back to "filter"? Last summer we drained all the water out and refilled the pool, our pH is good, chorine is good, acid is good. I've shocked the heck out of it and the water gets marginally less green for a few days is all. I don't know what DE is that people keep referring to. Please tell me what to do.

Sorry I missed this
I suspect you need to Slam (Shock Level and Maintain) with relation to Chlorine / CYA Chart and Recommended Pool Levels
I also suspect that you use stabilised chlorine which puts CYA in the water
Excessive CYA renders your chlorine ineffective and you have to use more to get the same sanitation
For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Dichlor, it also increases CYA by 9 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Cal-Hypo, it also increases Calcium Hardness (CH) by at least 7 ppm
To reduce your CYA you have to do a partial drain and refill
Let's have your numbers

TC:
pH:
TA:
CH:
CYA:
