Pet pooped in pool
If the pet is in healthy condition, the easiest way is to shock the pool to a high reading of chlorine level, then let the chlorine level come down to a safe level on its own in a few days. Absolutely no swimming until then.
You say the pet is old, and if the pet is sick, has a disease, play it safe, drain the pool and if you have a plaster finish, get the surface sanitized with chlorine. Don't take shortcuts with disease, it must be killed thoroughly.
The CDC has a PDF sheet on 'poo in the pool' for more information.
