Air, Cloudy, No Suction You Name it

Postby kieronma » Thu 25 Aug, 2016 04:00

Had a party at the weekend with lots of people in the and of course the water went cloudy. Since then the pump has been misbehaving. Here are the symptoms.

What I have done
Back washed until the water ran clear
Rinsed
Cleaned all baskets
Checked the seals as best I can (no leaks)
Sand is less than a year old

What's happening
I run the pump and occasionally the basket before the pump runs low and/or dry. Releasing the access window allows the pool water to flood in and fill the chamber
When it does run you see bubbles (see picture)

When the filter is running the viewing window is half full (see picture)

I sense that I'm running and setting up the filter in the wrong order and trapping air in the filter. Any help would be appreciated and I'm on hand to answer any question for clarity - something my pool is in need of.

Thanks Kieron

It seems that you are sucking air in from the suction side of the pump
Check the water level at the skimmer level. It should be half to two thirds up
Check the skimmer flap isn't stuck up
Lubricate the pump basket "O" ring with silicon grease

When the filter is running the viewing window is half full (see picture)

Assuming the window empties when the pump stops running, this indicates a leak to waste.

The cause may be a bit of crap stuck under the change plate. It may be as easy to fix as change valve position to backwash or recirculate, run for a few minutes and reseat the valve at filter.

If this doesn't work, then it is likely the gasket has failed under the change plate and a valve service is required.

It's still a suction side air leak

More often than not it is a O-ring that needs replacing. It is a cheap repair and if that takes care of it it is a relief.
