Shock with the clorine gen

Hi I have a new pool with the goldline Aqua Rite system, Pool builder said to shock just flip the switch to superclorinate. Local Pinch a penny store told me thats a bad idea will shorting the cells life and should use reg shock to shock the pool, as they said several customers have been in store becouse there cell has failed already due to useing the super mode on the unit. is this true, I would rather spend a few bucks on reg shock then over 500 on a new cell.
