New to Me Pool - Want to make sure I am on the right track

Postby nelsonatc » Thu 06 Jun, 2019 11:06

Hello All!

I bought a house and inherited a 2 year old 27' AG pool (15,400 gal), running a sand filter. Electrical and bonding has been brought up to code. Filter and pump tested and operational.

I picked up a K2006 kit and ran a battery of tests yesterday:

pH-Yellow, so assume it is <6.8
CYA - 0
FC - 0
CC - 0
TA = 20ppm

The seller told me he left everything he had for the pool. I only found 5 gal empty Chlorine jugs. No other chemicals or test kit was found. It looks like he just dumped in chlorine and hoped for the best (typical based on some of the half-ass work I have found in the house to date)

Water is greenish, with leaves on the bottom of the pool (PO covered without cleaning). I can feel a slime on the walls

My plan:
Raise pH to 7.4
SLAM with Trichlor to add CYA and chlorine. Switch to straight liquid chlorine once CYA gets to 30ppm

Sounds like a reasonable plan
You would need to Slam (Shock Level and Maintain) at about 10ppm
The only thing with Trichlor is you can't be that precise with your dosing
With a low TA you will want to raise that as well as pH
Also a good brushing
You can also use Pool Maths to work out what quantities to use

For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Dichlor, it also increases CYA by 9 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Cal-Hypo, it also increases Calcium Hardness (CH) by at least 7 ppm

Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite or plain bleach)
Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) to lower pH and TA
Bicarbonate of soda to raise TA
Aeration will raise pH only
Soda ash will raise pH and TA

Don't bother adjusting pH or TA yet, both will rise when chlorine is added and chlorine is more powerful at the lower pH. Add chlorine at night so it doesn't get burned up by the sun. Deal with the algae first and adjust levels later. Being vinyl you do not require the TA level higher than about 40ppm. That will stop the pH rising. Using a low TA means pH adjusting uses a lot less acid or alkai but there really is no need to have 80-120 that figure is for concrete plaster and tiled pools

Update:

All is going well. Ended the SLAM a couple days ago. Kids used the pool last night with no issue.

Ran full battery of tests this AM:
FC - 4.0
CC - 0
pH - 7.4
TA 70
CH 40
CYA - >20 (when i fill the tester to the top, its a little cloudy, but not disappearing yet)
Temp- 72F

At this point, I am clorinating with Triclor pucks, and will continue to do so until I reach a CYA or 30, then I will transition to liquid chlorine.

Those figures look good, you might just want to do an overnight chlorine loss test OCLT to be100% sure

I have done testing in the evening and first thing on AM when I was SLAMing. Once I got 2 days of less than .5 loss, I ended.

That's perfect, you're done
All you need now is to keep on top of it by keeping regular dosing of chlorine
