Can I / should I?

Postby molokoid » Sun 05 Apr, 2020 03:57

Hi all,

I'm a but of a chemistry-phobe with a below ground 19,000 gallon pool.

I'm trying to spring open it myself (given the COVID-19 restrictions we are under in the UK) and so far I have vacuumed to waste, broadly balanced alkalinity and ph and then shock treated the pool, to the point my green in the water has gone, I am at cloudy stage now.

So my question is; can I and should I do these things simulatenously?
- Dose 500ml of water clarifier (mine is Aliphatic Polyamine) into the pool itself
- Add 1 or 2 cubes of Jolly Gel to the pump ahead of the sand filte
- Add a 200g multifunctional chlorine tablet to the skimmer

Thanks in advance!

Get a decent FAS/DPD test kit
If you had green in the water you need to Slam (Shock Level and Maintain) with relation to the Chlorine / CYA Chart and Recommended Pool Levels
Don't do anything yet till you have your slam under control
Use these common products to balance your pool
Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite or plain bleach)
Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) to lower pH and TA
Bicarbonate of soda to raise TA
Aeration will raise pH only
Soda ash will raise pH and TA
Chlorine tablets have cyanuric acid (CYA) in them and excessive amounts renders your chlorine ineffective
For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Dichlor, it also increases CYA by 9 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Cal-Hypo, it also increases Calcium Hardness (CH) by at least 7 ppm

I have a ColourQ Pro 7 kit. Strikethrough --> It's still sealed, the instructions baffle me I'm afraid. <--

But I've just had a bash at it for the first time.

And these were my results
FCL 1.25
TCL 7.80
pH too high!
ALY 161
CH 94 but actually 188 (there is a note in the testing kit packaging that states reading to multiplied by 2)
CYA 43

I just ran the same tubes through the ColourQ machine a 2nd time and got wildly different results! I assume there is a timing window in which they have to be tested otherwise it all goes awry?!

Free chlorine (FC) is the amount of chlorine available to sanitise
Combined chlorine (CC) is the used up chlorine
Total chlorine (TC) is the two added together, so your CC is 6.65 so you definately need to slam
Have you checked out those links and you can get a video on YouTube to get further instructions for

I totally understand your 'teach a man to fish' approach, but I'm time poor, chemistry comprehension poor. I'll head somewhere else for the help I need.
