Hi .. yesterday I set up a bestway 16x10x42 (approx 3000 gallons) and upon fill up water is tinted green, but clear. I added shock and a 3" chlorine tab floater after filling and have had the filter running.
I had water analyzed the this morning and here are the results:
Free Chlorine: 4.03 ppm
Total Chlorine: 5.45
pH: 7.9
Total Alk: 43 ppm
Calcium Hardness: 62 ppm
CYA: 5 ppm
Iron: 0.2 ppm
Copper: 0.1 ppm
Phosphates: 603 ppb
TDS: 300 ppm
The pools store suggested and this afternoon I added:
2lbs 6oz of Alkalinity Up
41 fl Oz of Instant Pool Water Conditioner
10pm tonight and water still definitely tinted green...
My Phosphate level is very high so thinking of adding Phosphate Remover ... any other suggestions to turn this water crystal blue?
Thanks!
Pool Newbie .. pls help with green tinted water!

If the fill water on initial fill was green then it's your water supply and is probably metals in the water (was it well water)
Stop adding pool store products to your pool
Use these common products to balance your pool
Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite or plain bleach)
Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) to lower pH and TA
Bicarbonate of soda to raise TA
Aeration will raise pH only
Soda ash will raise pH and TA
Forget about phosphates
You can still use your pucks to raise your CYA to about 40-50
Excessive CYA renders your chlorine ineffective and you have to use more to get the same sanitation
For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Dichlor, it also increases CYA by 9 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Cal-Hypo, it also increases Calcium Hardness (CH) by at least 7 ppm
Although pool store testing is useful if you can't test yourself, you really need to get yourself a decent FAS/DPD test kit (Taylor K2006c or TF Testkits TF100 in the states) to get accurate results as maintaining an appropiate shock level means testing quite often during the day

yes, it is well water. What will help with metals in the water?

I added roughly 9oz of Sea Klear Metal Klear around 1:00pm and the water is still tinted yellow making the pool look green. Water is not cloudy at all.

Some people have made an extra filter

Thanks this looks promising, I found another post online from someone with a similar pool in my area and they resolved the issue with ProTeam Metal Magic. I'm going to give this a try and if that doesn't work I will build the extra filter.

I get iron staining in my pool and after doing an Ascorbic Acid Treatment I treat with a sequestrant to hold in suspension. ProTeam Metal Magic might just be a sequestrant

Also, I watched a few youtube videos on removing iron from pool and I put 3 socks around my return hose to add another layer of filtering. I did this overnight and it appears to be working very well. The socks were white to start and orange this morning. Rinsed and reapplied. Water is starting to look better.

I have heard of other people putting that polyfill in the filter basket to get some out as it leaves the pool but a heavily contaminated pool need the polyfil filter
Bear in mind that you may get surface staining even with clear water

What do you use Liquid Chlorine for and with all of these do you still put it in the pool skimmer basket to add them or do you add it to the pool in another way. Our pool guy said to add all chemicals in the skimmer basket?

Liquid chlorine is what it says, chlorine in a liquid. Used to sanitise a pool. What type of chlorinator do you use
Any acid (Muriatic, CYA, chlorine pucks) should be put in the pool so that it is diluted before going through the pump
Liquid chlorine should be poured in near a return

Re: Pool Newbie .. pls help with green tinted water!
This was a brand new pool and the fill water had a yellow tint which made the pool look green. I added shock and used a 3"chlorine puck in the floater. I left the filter running for 4 days straight, rinsing out the filter 2x day and also put 3 socks over the return line (google how to remove iron from above ground pool on youtube). The socks would turn from white to brown. I would remove, rinse and reapply them. It looked like it was filtering rust out of the water. My pool looks great now.
