after the rain....

Postby sfusco12 » Thu 06 Aug, 2020 20:14

A major storm just ran through my area, filled my small pool with leaves and debris. I was able to skim most of it out and did a good vacuuming but the water is now tinted green, a little murky and there are some minor stains on the liner.

Any suggestions on how to bring it back to crystal blue?

Those numbers don't seem to bad except for the CYA
Check out Chlorine / CYA Chart and Recommended Pool Levels

Excessive CYA renders your chlorine ineffective and you have to use more to get the same sanitation
For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Dichlor, it also increases CYA by 9 ppm.
For every 10 ppm FC added by Cal-Hypo, it also increases Calcium Hardness (CH) by at least 7 ppm
To reduce your CYA you have to do a partial drain and refill. To get it down to about 50 you will need to drain 50% of your water
Correct sanitation will be all you need to keep algae at bay and not algicide

Use these common products to balance your pool
Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite or plain bleach)
Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) to lower pH and TA
Bicarbonate of soda to raise TA
Aeration will raise pH only
Soda ash will raise pH and TA

I've been cleaning the filter and added 3 socks to the return for some extra filtration. Filter keeps turning green along with the socks. I have started the process of draining the pool 50% and the water seems to be slightly turning from green to blue. Once refilled I will update tomorrow. Appreciate the help.

Don't forget to raise your chlorine levels to 6-8 and if you need to Slam (Shock Level and Maintain) up to 20
Most people think that if they shock a pool, that's it. It isn't you have to maintain that shock level
That is why we recommend you really need to get yourself a decent FAS/DPD test kit (Taylor K2006c or TF Testkits TF100 in the states) to get accurate results as maintaining an appropiate shock level means testing quite often during the day

OK ... I drained roughly a 3rd of the pool and left the filter running overnight, green is gone and we are back to blue! I refilled the pool this morning, cleaned filter cartridge and vacuumed. I added some more shock 4 oz (Cal Hypo) to raise chlorine level as suggested. I had the water retested at the pool store ...

Here are the latest #s:
FC: 8.18
TC: 8.59
pH: 7.8
TA: 70
CH: 56
CYA: 84
Copper: 0.4 (I was told this is high) <-- any thoughts here?

Thanks!

CYA of 84 is still high still need to keep chlorine high
Cal hypo puts calcium into the water, not to bad with a vinyl liner
Not sure about copper was it present before and are you on a well

Your chlorine is still low for your CYA it should be 6-8 with a minimum of 4
Bear in mind that metal remover is a sequestrant and holds the metal in suspension but doesn't remove it
Don't forget the common products that you can use to balance your pool
