backwashing

I have a haywood DE filter, 16x38 inground vinyl, 33,000 gallons of water.
What is the difference from backwashing and waste.
When should I backwash. I did today after vacuumming some algae out of the pool, my husband said I should not have done that because I wasted DE chemicals. Is this so... How and when should I backwash.

Anyone know.

Backwashing is required when the filter pressure reaches the upper limit of it's normal operating range. Setting the filter to Waste is normally used for reducing the water level after heavy rain, emptying the pool, or when vacuuming large debris.

Oh, ok, that is typically what I have been doing, but I have algae
from hell and I tried backwashing thinking it will cure it. I'm guessing
not....
Anyway, should I add DE now that I backwashed for no
reason.
