vacuming
i have a question? Is it a bad thing to turn the main drains off to get the maxium suction from my skimmer.
Ideally 30-40% of your water flow should come from your main drain. Completely shutting it off can cause chemistry problems (some chemicals are heavier than water and will sink), algae problems (no main drain flow can cause "dead zones" in your water where algae can flourish), and circulation problems (if your skimmers get too clogged from leaves your pump wont get any water). I would advise against it but have seen it done.

No, it would not be bad to turn off main drain to vac.
If you are getting alot of debris that are clogging up skimmer/pump baskets cut/trim trees/bushes causing problem. Before vacuuming pool use net to get majority of leaves, then vac. or add automatic pool cleaner to pool with leaf trap added to hoses.
